Wind energy

Conventional sources of electricity come from burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas, oil and from nuclear fuels. There are fears of fossil fuel shortages, and an international consensus that fossil fuels are creating climate change.

Power generation from clean energy sources has become increasingly important. To reflect these needs, UK Government targets seek to have 15% of the UK's energy generated by renewable sources by 2015, and 20% by 2020.

The UK benefits of wind energy are extensive
  • meeting the UK's increasing demand for electricity
  • increased diversity of supply and therefore security of supply
  • helping to meet UK energy targets of 20% renewable generation by 2020
  • reduced carbon dioxide emissions by replacing fossil fuel generation
  • enforcing the UK's commitment to halting climate change
  • aids in the prevention of biodiversity loss caused by unchecked world temperature rises

'Ethical Living', The Guardian, 24/4/8 is an article regarding the importance of building wind farms to prevent biodiversity loss attributed to climate change.
